The population was 17,754 at the 2000 census. Easley is in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and is known to many for its hosting of the Annual Big League World Series.

What is now Pickens County was mostly wilderness 300 years ago. It first was settled primarily by the Cherokee Indians in the area that now is under Lake Keowee. With South Carolina being one of the thirteen original colonies, Pickens County has its share of Revolutionary War and Civil War era memorabilia and a vast tapestry of culture and history woven in between those two wars and since.

Easley was named after Confederate Gen. William King Easley. In the late 1800s, Easley persuaded officials from the Charlotte-to-Atlanta Airline Railroad to lay a track through the town. The town of Easley was surveyed and lots sold on August 3, 1873, shortly after the railroad was finished. A charter was granted immediately afterward, the town site being on half mile square. R. E. Holcombe was elected Intendant (Mayor). The arrival of the railroad helped fuel development of the textile industry in Pickens County.

Today, Easley is a fanciful blend of ease and activity. There's always plenty to do and see around Easley. The Pickens County Museum in Pickens houses art and local history exhibits in a 1902 Victorian jail which resembles a castle. The Hagood-Mauldin House is a classical Greek revival house featuring 17th and 18th century art and furnishings is also in Pickens, the county seat.
