About Greer, South Carolina Real Estate
Greer was first established as Greer’s Station in 1873 as a flag station along the Atlanta-Charlotte Air Line Railroad. The town was officially incorporated as Greer’s in 1876, but later became known simply as Greer. From the late 1870’s through the 1890’s, downtown Greer prospered in the cotton trade and the streets were lined with a variety of businesses such as general stores, physicians, and other essential services. These and many early businesses in Greer were grouped in wood frame buildings around the Public Square and along Trade Street, the main business avenue leading from the rail depot. By about 1901, two new railroads, Southern Railways and Piedmont and Northern, constructed competing rail lines through Greer. Commercial activity eventually focused between the two tracks as businesses sought to have easy access to transportation for their products.
For many years, Greer remained primarily an agriculture center whose principal industry was textiles. Through the years, though, many other diversified industries have located in and around Greer, helping to give the city and area a more balanced economy. Most of these industries, which have located in Greer and the surrounding area since the end of World War II, have expanded their plants, increased production, and added more employees with larger payrolls, all of which has been a boom to the economy of this entire area. Since World War II, the agriculture area around Greer gradually moved away from cotton. Peaches are still an important crop, but farmers have also turned in increasing numbers to cattle raising and the growing of soybeans and other crops.
Greer is strategically located between Atlanta and Charlotte in what is projected to be one of the fastest growing areas in the country with splendid rail, highway and air transportation facilities available. The area also has dependable labor, good roads and schools, and an ideal climate.
Greer is home to Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport, which serves Greenville, Spartanburg, and The Upstate and Piedmont regions of South Carolina. Greer is also the site of the only BMW manufacturing facility in North America. According to a June 2005 article in The Greenville News, BMW's Greer plant employs about 4,600 workers, and has attracted dozens of suppliers in South Carolina, providing jobs for more than 12,000 workers. Greer has also been home to the Michelin North America main headquarters for almost a quarter of a century. It is South Carolina's fifth biggest employer. Its longtime presence in South Carolina has amassed a work force of 9,000 and owns seven manufacturing facilities in South Carolina: Anderson, Greenville, Lexington, Spartanburg and Winnsboro.
Historic downtown Greer covers approximately 12 square blocks with retail, dining, entertainment, and personal and professional service establishments. Greer Station is home to more than 40 buildings on the National Historic Register and the downtown area itself is designated as a National Historic District. Greer Station has some of the greatest concentrations of quality turn of the century buildings in Greenville and Spartanburg Counties. These buildings are complemented by a unique street pattern that conveys an intimate scale and small village atmosphere.
The City Center is currrently undergoing a major transformation, aided by an ongoing partnership between the City of Greer, the Partnership for Tomorrow, the Greer Commission of Public Works, the Greater Greer Chamber of Commerce, and the Greer Development Corporation.
